Cortinarius porphyroideus

This image to the right looks like what we called C. porphyroideus, but that particular specimen isn't - I have put it there only as representative of a group that look like this. They are unmistakable with their mauve to purple gasteroid fruiting body. There are a few species that appear similar and have shared this name.

However, they have now been differentiated, using genetic (DNA) analysis, and the new species have been named. See the diagram below.

The real C. porphyroideus is known from only a few sites near Wellington.
