Blechnum fluviatile

This species is common through much of the country, especially in damp shady areas beside streams.

The plants are quite distinctive with their rosette shaped clumps of drooping sterile fronds. The fertile fronds are more upright.

Common names are: Creek fern, Kiwakiwa, and Kiwikiwi.

Notice the fertile fronds in these two photos - the mature thin black fronds above, and the less developed thin pale erect fronds in the photo to the right.

Most Blechnums have distinct sterile and fertile fronds.
